Melanie Hammet’s artistry includes music and writing for theatre, solo performance, and young audiences.
Collaboration with former Alliance Theatre director, Kenny Leon, produced the musical score for Livin’ In The Garden. Her original script, I Dream Wild Horses, was selected for development through Horizon Theatre Company's New South PlayWorks series. Over the last decade, Melanie has performed with Gerard McHugh as "The Bugaboos!" As solo artist, she has appeared in local and regional venues including Eddie’s Attic.

For the past twelve years Melanie has worked at the Link Counseling Center as music facilitator with the grieving children’s group..

I grew up between the mountains of Virginia and the beaches of south Alabama. My father, a professor, passed on his love of books by reading to me every night until I became a surly teenager with no use for such meaningful activities. In spite of myself, however, I absorbed his passion for stories and grew up viewing the world through the lens of fables, fairytales, and folklore.

This passion has become my lifestyle. Whether spoken or sung, danced or drawn, the personal and collective mythologies that describe who we are to each other are my continued focus. I spent the first ten years after high school collaborating on musical theatre for children grades K-12, concentrating on themes and issues specific to each age. Coming Of Age, a musical about the angst of adolescence, was made into a film and published internationally.

In more recent years my work has focused on three intentions: first, collaboration with other artists and creative disciplines; second, discovering new creative outlets and structures; third, building community using the arts. There is much overlap in these three areas,
and my projects have included an array of creative collaborations with psychologists, puppeteers, set designers, studio engineers, graphic artists, and accountants -- to name a sampling.

In the next several dozen years I hope to hear and to tell a thousand more stories.

Map Of Glass is a romp through language, genre, and collaboration----the formal poetics of “Devastating Beauty;” the 60’s musical theatre circus of “Time Machine;” the contribution of each artist. From the primitive drumming on “Burn” to the shattered Technicolor cover, this recording is fantastical fun!

Map of Glass is Melanie Hammet's twelfth recording.
